Headed Home

I'm headed home and looking forward to seeing the family for half a day before I head back out on the road.  Thought it was only appropriate to take a picture by the Delta sign as I was headed home today.  Also today I say this picture on Facebook so I thought I should grab a screen shot.  I'm thinking I'm going to need to get Jen and the boys one of these sweatshirts.  Hopefully after this next trip I'll be home for a while.

Headed Home Tomoorw

After a week of meetings here in Seattle I'm headed home tomorrow, get home around 11pm and head out to Huntsville Alabama on Sunday for a week of meetings.  Tonight I get to see a friend I haven't see since college which I'm really looking forward too.  Been an alright week of meetings, only complaint I have about Seattle is that I've been waking up every morning around 4:30am.  Make for a long day when you get up that early.

Night At The Theater

Tonight on Jen's last night here we decided to go to the theater for the evening.  Been a while since we've been able to go out and have a real adult night out.  Looking forward to the show after out undergound tour this morning that talked about the "darker" side of early Seattle.  The show is called "Seattle Vice" and is about the Seattle "Women of the Night".  Should be good!

Art Museum Visit

This morning after we did the Underground Tour, which was really cool.  I didn't realize they had built the city of Seattle up one story and at one point in the history had road raised up and sidewalks in trenches down below.  Guess that is what happens when you build your city way too close to the bay.  I would recommend the tour to anyone who visits the city.

The art museum here in Seattle was quite the experience and clearly pressed my understanding of what "art" is.  Clearly I can understand the artistic value in the piece that I've shown above but as I walked around we started to get into the more abstract pieces.  It started the with the standard squares and circles on canvas, followed by somebody just dumping paint on a canvas which I was getting a whole lot of humor out of.  Then we got to the real crazy stuff that I could not believe was even considered art.

I assure the pictures above are of actual art on display in the gallery, I did not raid the construction site next to my hotel and just take pictures of random crap.  Yes that is indeed cardboard pasted to a wall, a gross toilet seat and final a freaking urinal, WOW! I would love to sit in this area all day and listen to pretentious art people have an intelligent conversation about this stuff because I clearly don't get it.  If I would have known that gross toilet seats were worth so much money I would have been stealing them all along.  All of that said Jen was not amused with my laughing but she did say it even tested her artistic limits.  If nothing else if was a good comedy show for the morning!

Great Supper

This evening we had dinner at a Italian Restaurant called Vito's which was spectacular.  Once again I was surprised how empty the restaurant was seems that if you want to come visit Seattle and not have to fight the crowds mid-January is the time.  So far Seattle has turned out to be a pretty cool place to visit and the perfect business trip for Jen to come on.

Space Needle

You can't visit Seattle without a visit to the Space Needle.  Once again with it being a Tuesday and not a real nice day there was absolutely no line to go up to the top of the Space Needle.  Of course when we got to the top clouds rolled in so we couldn't see but it gave us time to rest after the 2 mile walk over and charge our phones.  The clouds did eventually clear and I got to take a selfie.

Pike's Market

Pike's Market is a major location in Seattle that really embodies all that is the city.  Artists selling their work, fish markets, and tons of local food sellers. This is a really cool place and Jen has said over and over again she really doesn't want to leave.  To be honest I'm a pretty big fan myself.

First Starbucks

As we were wandering around this morning we happened upon the first Starbucks coffee in Pike's Market.  Well as a huge Starbucks fan I had to stop in and get a coffee from the original.  I was shocked that it wasn't busy at all we walked right in and got served immediately.  Check something else off the bucket list!

Checking Out the Town

I don't have any meetings until this afternoon so Jen and I had time to check out the city this morning.  As you can see it a bit rainy out today but I guess this is Seattle so it isn't shocking.  We did find out that pretty much nothing opens up until 10am this morning so we have a bit of time to kill before we can do much.  I guess we will walk around a bit and see what we find.

Headed to Seattle

For the first time ever I took Jen on business travel with me so she could see what it's like and enjoy the city.  Since I have a ton of frequent flyer miles I was able to get her a ticket for free so the trip won't really cost that much.  It will be nice to have her with because it's gets really boring being by yourself on your down time between meetings, plus this is the first "Adult" trip we've had in a long time.

Didn't Burn The House Down

We got back home and the boys didn't manage to burn the house down or anything.  They did dive into the snack and soda's but what do you expect when you leave two kids by themselves all afternoon.  Seems like Jen and I will start to be able to have date night's pretty soon like we used to before we had kids.

First Afternoon by Themselves

This afternoon we had to go meet Mema and Papa in Cedar Rapids at Best Buy so they could get a new Ipad.  As we were getting ready to leave the boys came down and asked if they could stay home this afternoon.  We've left them home before for an hour or two while were at meeting in town but never while we left the town.  They are good kids and very responsible so we weren't worried.  Plus all they were going to do it play video games in their pajamas all afternoon.

Bells In Church

Today Marshall was acolyte and they both had a bell performance in church.  While Marshall was lighting candles today the other kid he was with forgot to light one of the candles.  Marshall had to relight it wick so he could light the candle.  Well in the process of that lighting he managed to drip hot wax on himself.  Poor kid is up in the front of the church making crazy faces because he got a burn on his hand.  He did tough it out and get the candles lit and transition right into playing bells.

Video Games

We've entered video game time of the year.  With it cold and crappy out there isn't much to do outside so we spend out weekend playing video games.  As you can see Harley is not real happy about being ignored constantly while I play video games.  Kind of hard to play with him sitting on you right in the way of the TV.

Back On the Road Again

After a fairly long stint at home I'm back on the road again next week for a couple weeks.  First I'm headed out to Seattle for a full week of meetings.  Fly back Saturday and then I'm back in a plane on Sunday headed to Huntsville for another week of meetings.  Get back from that on Saturday and then there is a slight possibility I may have to head back to Germany.  I am bringing Jen with me to Seattle for a couple days so we can visit the city while I'm not meeting which will be fun.

Sleeping In

With it being colder than heck today, -10 this morning, and the fact I kept the boys up past midnight playing video games, today is going to be a pajama day at the VanOort house.  No leaving the house, everyone is sleeping in and we are going to play video games and watch movies all day while we try to stay warm.  Going to be a great day!

Lunch and Presents

Everyone ended up getting here around 11am today which was perfect timing so we could dig into the Ham and Mashed Potatoes that Marshall requested for lunch.  As you can see we just got done with lunch and presents, and Papa came strong with the present game.  This year he made Marshall a wooden catapult which was pretty awesome.  Expecting to get hit with a ton of plastic balls launched from the catapult.

Marshall's Birthday!

Today is Marshall's 12th birthday and his last year as a "kid".  Next year he will officially be a teenager and be on his next step towards adulthood.  This morning Marshall requested that Jen make him Monkey Bread and eggs for breakfast, which is a family favorite.  This afternoon we have the family coming over for lunch and presents should be a fun day.

Rewards Reset :(

As a frequent traveler you come to live by your travel status.  Well this time of year is the worst time over year for travelers because all the travel status is reset and you have to start from zero and start accumulating for the year again.  Glad I have a couple trips scheduled so I can get my numbers off of the zero mark for the year.

Afternoon with Clancey

Today Clancey and I headed into Cedar Rapids together so I could take him to soccer and we could have some lunch together.  Jen had to help with communion at church today so she couldn't come with.  That left Clancey and I heading to CR by ourselves.  Works out though because it's been a long time since Clancey and I got to spend some time together.  As you can see we had to head over to our favorite lunch spot for something to eat.

Sledding With The Family

Today as something fun as the Christmas break is coming to a close we all decided to head to sledding hill for the afternoon.  We got there around 3pm today and were surprised to see that the hill was empty and we had it all to ourselves.  We ended up sledding for 3 hours, until dark and had a really good time.  I'm thinking Marshall is going to want to go sledding for his birthday now after all the fun we had today.
