Free Saturday

In what seem like a first in a long time we had our first "free Saturday", where we didn't have anything on our schedule.  This morning Jen and I both got our workouts in and this afternoon we are all going to head to Cedar Rapids to run some errands.  We figured if we waited late in the day we wouldn't have to deal with as many people out and about.  Plus as an added bonus we could hit up some supper.

Colder Than Hell

Today is one of the coldest days of the year and clearly not an ideal day to get up at 4am to go swim. I have to thank Jen for pushing me to get a engine block heater because I'm not sure my car would have started otherwise. The kids lucked out that they don't have to go to school today so the family gets to stay warm all day. I'll be happy when I can get home and enjoy my chair and a warm blanket.

Clancey Conference

With both the boys still sick I had to go to Clancey's parent/teacher conference by myself.  Since Clancey is a really good student and doesn't have any behavioral issues the conference is more about things Jen and I can do to help the teacher rather then Clancey.  The conference went well, just like I expected, and his teacher and I had a great conversation about what things we can talk to the school board and superintendent about to even out the class sizes and get her the help she needs.  I'm happy our kids are good at school and enjoy learning, hopefully it stays that way.  Thursday we will see what Marshall's teachers say, probably a lot of the same things they did about Clancey. :)

No Honor Choir

Marshall and Clancey were both sick today which means not honor choir for Marsh.  He's pretty disappointed but there will be other opportunities.  Hopefully we can get the kids better this week because conferences are this week and it's nice for both Jen and I to be able to attend.

Sick Kids

Yesterday before the basketball tournament Marshall was kind of complaining about not feeling that good but Jen and I chalked it up to him being nervous about the game.  We made him go but shortly after we got home he started to complain again and ended up laying on the couch for most of the afternoon.  Today both him and Clancey have it so honor choir tomorrow is starting to look doubtful.

Basketball Tournament

Today was the big basketball tournament and the last day for Marshall.  At the beginning of the season Marshall wasn't real excited about playing but now he has really enjoyed the season.  They won the first game and ended up losing the second game to a team that had beaten them earlier in the season.  They played them a lot closer and, to be honest, it could have went either way but they lost.  The boys had a great season and I'm happy Marshall stuck it out.

Band and Choral Concert

This evening was Marshall's second band and choral concert or the year.  This was the first time that I've gotten to see a band concert because I was in France the last time.  It was really enjoyable and I was impressed at how good the band did.  I'm looking forward to seeing him in his honor choir on Monday to see how that goes.

Day Off For the Boys

Being President's Day the boys have the day off and I have to go to work.  Of course before I left they were in the Video Game Room enjoying themselves and it was hard to not just throw in the towel, take the day off, and have a video game day.  Too bad I have some much to do or I would have.

Olivia's Birthday

Today after we did our church duties we drove over to Webster City for Olivia's birthday party.  Since I have to work tomorrow were going to have to make the round trip but that's alright at least we get to enjoy some Hickory Park on the way home.  As you can see papa came through once again with a really awesome hand made gift.

Last Basketball Game

I know last weekend I wrote a lengthy blog entry about it being the last basketball game of the year well turns out this weekend was the last game of the year before the tournament.  They played against a team they had beaten before so they weren't too worried about the game.  They started the game out with the 2nd team players in, so Marshall got to start the game.  For the first half the game stayed relatively close and once again Marshall played really well.  Towards the end of the game Marshall got the ball and made his first shot of the year!  We were so excited to see him make a shot.  Sure wish I would have had it on video.

Afternoon At The Pool

After being in the Arizona all week and not being able to swim, I figured today I would head to the Tipton to pool to get a swim in and bring the family with.  When we got there the pool was crazy packed with kids that were all down there celebrating a birthday party. It really didn't matter though because even though it was packed the boys still managed to have a really good time.  I think we went off the board a dozen times before we headed home to play some video games and watch movies.

Jen Getting Sworn In

This morning at church, since last week got cancelled due to the blizzard, Jen got inducted to her 4 year term as a church council member.  Looks like we will be attending a whole lot more church over the next 4 years.

Last Basketball Game Before Tourney

Today Marshall played his last basketball game before the Tourney.  The game was against the rival North Cedar team and the best team in the league.  While they lost the game it was close the whole time and Marshall played great.  He got a couple rebounds and played defense like a beast again.  He sticks to his opponents like glue and frustrates the heck out of them.  I'm thinking that they could do pretty good in the tourney again this year and medal again.  Should be a fun day of games.

Finally about 5:30pm I made it home after a really long day of travelling.  I was up at 5am in Tuscon to get on the plane and, after driving 120 miles, from Des Moines I got home.  Not quite as nice as it was in Arizona but not too bad for Iowa.  Most of the snow was melted off my car, which was a plus, and the roads were 4000 times better than when I traveled down last Sunday.  This evening the plan it to sit in my chair and sleep.

On My Way Home

Here I am on my way home and it's already been a huge pain.  Since I had such a weird set of flights on the way down the airline totally messed up my return flight.  I needed to go back to Des Moines because that's where my car was, well the airline had me going to Cedar Rapids.  After standing in three lines to talk to ticket agents for about an hour I finally got it straightened out and I'm getting ready to board.  I made to the gate 15 minutes before we boarded, good thing I got to the gate early!

Afternoon Of Golf

Today I managed to get my meetings done by noon which I meant I had an afternoon to kill.  Some of my friends and I decided that it would be fun to head out to the course and play some golf.  The hotel we stayed at had a great deal for 18 holes, a cart and rental clubs so we hit the links.  I ended up playing some of my best golf in a long time and had a great time.  While I'm looking forward to seeing the family, I'm not looking forward to leaving these 80 degree temps behind.

Free Morning

The Monday more before the actually conference starts we have a chairs meeting in the afternoon. What that means is since I fly in a day early I generally have Monday morning to myself to workout and get a few things done. First thing this morning I had to head to the airport to get my luggage that came in on a different plane. Once I got back from there I decided I should use this good weather and get outside for a workout. After my workout it seemed appropriate to sit by the pool for my cool down. Once my meetings get started there won't be any more relaxing and enjoying the day so it was good to get it in now.

At Des Moines Airport

After waiting in line at Cedar Rapids Airport for nearly 2 hours I found out the best they could do is get me out Wednesday for my travel to Tuscon.  Then they offered up an option that seemed like a good idea at the time.  They told me that they had a 6pm flight out of Des Moines to Phoenix and then on to Tuscon.  After my drive in to Cedar Rapids the roads were crappy but not that crappy so I figured it wouldn't be too bad to drive to Des Moines, plus I had 6 hours to do it.  Well turns out that the roads were really crappy and it was pretty much a blizzard but as a man I was not deterred, seemed like a great opportunity to validate my "Man Card".  I ended up making it to the Des Moines airport at 4:15pm finally made it past security at 5:00 and then my plane got delayed until 8pm.  That will have me miss my connection to Tuscon in Pheonix and since the Superbowl is going on in Phoenix right now there are no hotels.  The plan is to land in Phoenix and make the 100 mile drive to Tuscon.  Hopefully I can get out of here at 8:00 and I can get my luggage intercepted.  I'll keep you updated to my progress, hopefully I make it tonight!

Travel Woes

This morning right as I was headed out the door I saw my flight got cancelled. I tried to call the airline but was told there would be a 3 hour wait so I thought the best thing would be to drive a the airport to rebook and get out. Well as you can see after a drive in on horrible roads, I got stuck in a line that was crazy long to try and rebook. At this point it's not looking good to even get out today which means I'll be braving the roads back home. Seems like the better decision would have been to wait at home for a call back. Oh well live and learn.

Winter Wonderland

This morning Jen and I woke up to a whole lot of new snow on the ground, in the first big snow of the year. Normally this would be alright we could hunker down for the day, put our pajamas on and watch some movies with the boys. Problem is I have to head to the airport to get on a plane at 11:30 to Tuscan for the next week. Guess I better get up and start attempting to dig out and see what the likelihood is that I'm going to make it.
