Basketball Game

This morning, after his 3am night last night, Marshall really didn't want to go play his basketball game.  He was lobbying pretty hard but I told him "If you're man enough to party all night, you better be man enough to get up in the morning and meet your responsibilities.".  Didn't think I would be breaking that one out this early in his young life.  Once we got him to the game he was alright.  The team they played today wasn't very good and by halftime they reset the score and stopped keeping track.  Marshall ended up playing a pretty good game again this week and was a killer on defense.  He only has one more game next weekend before the tournament and then the season will be over.  Hopefully they do good in the tournament again this year!

Sleep Over

Last night Marshall had a sleep over with his friends for the first time since we got the video game room put together.  They ended up staying up until 3am playing games and having a great time.  As you can see they kind of left the video game room in kind of a disheveled state but I'm glad they enjoyed the room.

Chess Tournament

Today, more than a week after starting the school chess tournament, Marshall finished playing his games.  He ended up winning one more game before he got knocked out of the tournament.  He was pretty proud of himself because he was the last 5th grader in the tournament.  Over the next year Marshall and I are going to do some practicing so maybe he pull out the victory next year.

Relaxing on the Couch

Not much to really say about this picture but I thought I would post it because I really liked it.  Clancey had got bored of playing video games so he came downstairs to watch TV and read a book with Jen.  Just one of small moments that seemed worth capturing.

Harley Relaxing

This afternoon I went to go sit in my chair and this is what I happened upon.  It appears Harley is relaxing and enjoying himself in my chair.  Before I kicked him out I took the opportunity to take a picture because while he was in my chair he did look pretty funny.

Family Day

After Marshall's basketball game today we all headed into Cedar Rapids for a family day.  Marshall had gotten a whole bunch of Barnes and Noble gift cards for his birthday so we figured today would be a good day to head into CR to let him pick some books out.  Of course while we were there we had to stop and have lunch at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants.

Marshall Played a Great Game

Today Marshall had another basketball game down in Tipton and played a heck of a game.  On the way down I told Marshall he should have a goal of getting a rebound.  He wasn't sure he could get one but said he would try.  Well I have to say he played harder than I have ever seem him play.  He was all over the court, at one point he crashed to the ground try to get a rebound.  While his team lost I was really proud of how good he did.

Medal Sign Hung Up

Today Jen got the sign she gave me for Christmas mounted on the wall above my desk.  It's pretty cool do see all my triathlon medals on display.  Wish that they were all Ironman finisher medals, because I would be able to apply for a Kona slot, but I'll get to 12 finished eventually.

Church Picture

In an effort to not be board to tears in church I was messing around with my phone.  I ended up taking this picture of the boys singing a hymn this morning.  Tick, tock, only about 30 more minutes to go!

Birthday Party

This evening was Marshall's birthday party because around the VanOort house you get two birthday parties!  Mema, Papa, Mike, Michelle and Olivia made it over for the birthday party.  Marshall ended up getting a handful of gift cards and a Ticket To Ride Game from Mike and Michelle.  We will have to break away from the video game room to try it out.

Basketball

Marshall had basketball first thing this morning and it was a heck of a game.  We were playing the other North Cedar team so all the boys knew one another, which also meant there was a lot at stake on this game.  The game went right down to the wire with our guy making a shot with 5 seconds to go to pull out the victory.  Marshall didn't play all that great, seems to be afraid to get the ball, but he did get to play quite a bit.

Chess Tournament End of Day Results

Looks like they didn't get the chess tournament done today so they will have to start it up again Tuesday, when they get back to school.  Marshall ended up losing his first game, to an 8th grader, and then won his second game in the loser bracket.  I'll be excited to see how he does on Tuesday, we will have to get some practice in this weekend.

Chess Tournament Day

Today at school Marshall is playing in the middle school chess tournament.  For the past few days we've been practicing to get him ready so hopefully he does well.  They are posting the results online so I will be anxiously following his progress throughout the day.

Marshall's Birthday

Today is Marshall's 11th birthday and this morning we are having a little celebration for him.  Jen got up early to make monkey bread for breakfast, which is one of his favorites.  She did have a bit of an incident when she tried to put candles in the monkey bread and they melted in the still hot bread.  Hence why in the picture above she is holding the candle in her hand.

Boys Hanging Out

I ended up having to work most of the day on a whitepaper for work so the boys were left to play video games by themselves.  I took this picture of them because it was nice to see them hanging out together.

Marshall the Titanfall Master

After the basketball game this morning all of the boys retired to the video game room to unwind a bit.  Over Christmas break Marshall and I really got into playing Titanfall and started a competition between us to see who the better player it.  For quite a while Marshall and I were pretty even in the game but today Marshall really took off and started to own me.  If you don't play Titanfall 160 is an amazing score. The best pro's in the game only score around 200 so as you can see he is getting right up there.  Normally I score right around 50-60 so he is 100 ahead of me.  Looks like I'm going to have to practice more if I want to keep up.

First Basketball Game

This morning Marshall had his first basketball game of the year and it went better than he expected it would. Marshall realizes that he isn't the greatest player on the team but clearly he didn't give himself enough credit.  He played great defense, got a few good passes and I would say did a great job.  The team ended up killing the other team and got the season started right.  Marshall saw the court quite a bit and I'm happy with his performance.

Working From Home

Today it is bitter cold out and after a shorten day yesterday the kids got the day off and I decided to work from home.  Looked over my calendar and there weren't any pressing meeting that I had to actually physically attend, and my car isn't real happy about starting, seemed like a good day to work from my new home office.  Like I said on Monday the kids have had an easy week so far, early out yesterday, no school today, likely a late start tomorrow.  Wish that was my schedule this week ;)

Back At It

Christmas break always goes way too fast and it's hard to believe we are at the end all ready.  Normally I try to take it easy getting back to work but today at work I've had to get right after it.  So far this looks to be a busy week and the weekend can come none to soon.  Looking at the weather this week, sub zero all week and a snow storm, it looks like the kids might have an easy week back to school.  I guess we will see how it all shapes up.

Lunch At The Ox Yoke

Once we got to Amana we decided to do lunch at the Ox Yoke Inn. Been awhile since we've been to a restaurant in Amana and I had forgotten how much food they gave you. We are all pretty stuffed now and I'm pretty sure Marshall got his moneys worth of mashed potatoes and gravy, last count I think we got 3 refills on them.

Family Trip To Amish Country

Today as our last hurrah before we are back to normal we headed out to Amish Country. Jen wanted to stop by Stringtown to get some things and then we thought stopping for lunch in Amana would be good. We are all looking forward to getting a serious amount of food and probably just snacking for supper after this. Tomorrow we start to get back to normal with church and getting ready to head back to work and school on Monday.

Boy Day

With this being the last official day of break, I took the boys to Davenport with me get a rock chip in my windshield fixed but also so we could have a boy day. In breaking from our standard tradition of going to Pancheros we decided to go to Famous Daves for lunch instead. After this I'm thinking we will head over to Best Buy to walk around and see what things they have. The boys have some gift cards so we will see if there are any things that they didn't get for Xmas but still want.

New Year

In keeping with the theme of the Christmas Break the boys and I rang the New Year in playing video games in the man cave.  The boys were playing Halo Reach online with some British guys and I rang the New Year in playing Titanfall.

Overall last year was a good year for the VanOort family.  We took two vacations, one to Beaver Island, one to Disney World.  I also finished two Ironman races, in addition to getting two of my ideas submitted for a patent, I also got a promotion to Principal Engineer that I had been working for the past few years.  Looking forward to seeing what 2015 has in store for us.
