Working Again Today

After working all day yesterday I had to go into work again this morning for a couple hours to get more stuff done.  I'm really hoping that we get caught up here pretty soon because between working crazy hours, training for Ironman and my other commitments I really haven't been able to be home much.  I'm pretty sure that Jen and the boys have forgotten my name at this point.  At least tonight we got to spend a little time together as a family and go out for some pizza at Happy Joe's.  Of course they managed to lose our order and it took us nearly an hour to get our pizza but at least we all got to hang out and see each other for awhile.

Dog Run The House

Tonight after I got home from a long day of work, yes I realize it's Saturday but I still had to go in to get some things done, the dog decided to jump in the basket of clean laundry and beg for food.  I know I say this all the time but this dog seems to run the house.  After slaving over laundry all day Jen just laughed and let her dog do what he wanted.  I'm pretty sure that in my next life I want to come back as a fat, lazy dog in a good home.

More Snow!

This is starting to get really old but once again today is snowed a whole bunch, the roads were a total mess and, if the kids would have had school, it would have been cancelled.  Took me about an hour and a half to get into work today and I'm beginning to think that we will never see the sunshine and warm temperatures again.  With March fast approaching I'm hoping this crap is almost done.

Supper At Hickory Park

Since we were in the area traveling through on our way home from Olivia's party we thought we would take the opportunity to stop at Hickory Park for some supper.  Clancey is a huge fan so he was really pushing for us to stop, although I think it is more about the ice cream then it is about the burgers.  Either way is is always worth the trip because the place is freaking awesome.

Olivia's First Birthday

Today we all hoped in the car and drove over to Thor for Olivia's 1st birthday party.  Being her 1st birthday Mike and Michelle put together a big party for the whole family at the hall in Thor, where Jen and I had our reception.  It was a nice party but since we weren't able to stay very long since we had to drive home yet tonight.  It good to see everyone make it out to celebrate her 1st birthday!

Last Game Before The Tournament

Today was Marshall's last basketball game before the tournament in two weeks. The kids played one of the best teams in the league and had their first defeat of the season. While they may have lost the game they played one of the best games of the season. Also this week the coaches on the other team were sportsman and didn't act like the turdy coach last week. In two weeks they have the tournament where I think they have a chance to win assuming they don't get worn down because they only have 5 people that show up.

Happy To Be Home

After a week in Florida, while I'm not happy about the weather, it is great to be home with the family. Plus it is nice be able to sleep in my own bed and eat a normal home cooked meal. While I enjoy traveling I'm not sure I could ever be a guy how travels multiple times a month, once every couple months is about enough for me.

Morning From Clearwater

This morning I got up and took in some of the scenery before I had to get showered up and get to work.  The resort has this nice restaurant on the beach that lets you enjoy your breakfast while listening to the ocean waves crash on the beach and take in the nice warm breeze.  Far cry from Iowa which I'm told is -11 degree's this morning.  At least for one week I get to escape the crazy cold and enjoy some warm temps while I work.

Made It To Clearwater

After a pretty non-eventful half day of travel I made it to my hotel, the Sirata Beach Resort and Conference Center, for my week of meetings.  Since it was dark when I landed I wasn't really able to see much scenery on my way from the airport to the hotel so I'm looking forward to the morning when I can actually see what it looks like.  After dinner I wandered around the resort a bit to check it out, apparently it's the off season right now so it was pretty dead.  I sat at the hotel bar for a bit and as you can see from the picture above I was the only person there.  Maybe when the conference gets going tomorrow there will be a few more people out and about.

Headed To Florida

Here I am at the eastern Iowa airport headed off to Clearwater Beach Florida for the week. Since I was leaving on Sunday the family decided to make the trip over to see me off at the airport, given that I'm traveling down by myself today it was nice to have them there to see me off. While I'm going to enjoy the nice temps I sure will miss the family this week. Seems likes it's been forever since I've seen them.

Highlights from February 8th 2014

Ice Cream Treats

Who doesn't enjoy a fine ice cream treat on a bitterly cold, snowy day in Iowa.  Great part about going to the Dairy Queen in the middle of the winter is the line is really short and there are plenty of places to sit.

Lunch At Zoey's

After the wild basketball game we piled in the car and headed over to Cedar Rapids to have some lunch at Zoey's pizza and get a few things.  It was snowing all day again today and the roads weren't necessarily the best but we were able to make it to enjoy some of the best pizza in town.  Being that I've been working a lot of late nights it was nice to be able to hang out as a family and have some fun.

Crazy Basketball Game

This morning Marshall had another basketball game and this one had a very crazy end.  To set the stage for this story one important fact should be noted, when the kids league plays in Stanwood the referees are the boys from the high school basketball team.  I'm not sure if the high school coach makes them or they volunteer or what but either way these kids wake up early give up their Saturday to referee kids games.  Well once again we were playing a team with a couple extremely big kids and a very vocal coach.  As the game progressed the coach from the opposing team got more and more upset with how he though the game was being refereed, once again I should remind you these are 3rd and 4th grade kids.  At one point in the first half the coach stands up and starts yelling across the court at the referee's and says "That's why we need adults refereeing the games."
We managed to get out of the first half with no more incidents but the second half he started to really get crazy.  More and more he yelled at the referee's telling them to call it both ways and a couple times brought them over to have words.  Finally with 30 seconds to go and his team up by 6 points he couldn't hold it in anymore.  One of his players committed his final foul on a very blatant foul, i.e. it was a good call.  The ref's went over to the score keeper, which happens to be our coach's son, to find out that he had committed his final foul and was out of the game.  At this point the opposing coach blew up, stood up and got in this high school kids face to voice his displeasure and I have to stay in body language gave the impression he wanted to get physical.  At this point the ref had enough and gave the coach a technical foul.  This made the coach even more upset, so much so his assistant coach had to get up and get between him and the ref.  Then out of the blew he calls his team over, says "We forfeit".
I have never seen such a show of poor sportsmanship in my life.  This is a 3rd/4th grade basketball league, where the games don't really even matter, with high school kids volunteering as refs.  As we were leaving the guy who runs the league as having some pretty heated words with this coach, which I hope results in him being thrown from the league.  At this age it should be about teaching the fundamentals of basketball and sportsmanship not about adults behaving like children and throwing temper tantrums.
Anyways since the other coach forfeit the game our boys remained undefeated for the year going into their last game next weekend in Tipton.  Hopefully the opposing coach can show a little more class for that game.

Out Of The Green Room

Finally after a month of being sequestered to windowless small conference room I completed my planing activity and am free from the Green Room. For the past 4 weeks I've spent a whole lot of late nights working in this room getting everything captured for my execution plan.  While there are a few remaining items to get accomplished the bulk of the work is complete and none to soon since I jump on a plane Sunday to head to Clearwater Beach, Florida for a week.  While I'll be down there for work I'm hoping to get a little time to enjoy the beach and the warm weather!

More Fun At The Pool

Fun At The Pool

Afternoon At The Pool

After spending yesterday laying around the house and since we hadn't been to the pool in a while we decided it was time to get out of the house and go have some fun.  The boys are both becoming very good swimmers, in fact Clancey goes off the diving board now like an old pro.  One time he went off and swam back to the shallow end all by himself.  We ended up playing for 2 hours before I packed up and left since we had a Superbowl party to get home too!

26 Weeks To Ironman

Been awhile since I've posted an update about Ironman.  As of today we are 26 weeks or 182 days from Ironman Boulder and I have to say my training has been going well so far.  Ever since I bought my treadmill, updated the pain cave and got a pool pass in Cedar Rapids I've really increased the amount of hours I put in each week.  This week I really felt a turn in the overall power on my bike and my last two rides of the week I stepped it up nearly a mile per hour average over how I had been riding the last couple weeks.  With the attempt at the double again this year, and especially with them 5 weeks apart, I really need to get a lot of hours in so my body isn't so damaged after my first one and I can be ready for the second one.  Where I really need to focus my time is increasing the overall miles I run so I can get my ankles used to the beating and not fight blisters like I do in every Ironman race.  Last year it took my ankles nearly 8 weeks to fully recover which I don't have time for this year.  The plan is to focus on increasing the miles and hours week to week and get my body prepared.

Lazy Day

After getting in a run of just over an hour the long week took it's toll and I cuddled into my chair with Harley for a long nap this afternoon.  Felt nice to get a long rest in and not have to worry about working today!

Marshall Basketball February 1st 2014

Another Busy Week

This week was another crazy busy week for me which didn't have me home most nights before 7pm, heck two of the nights I wasn't home until nearly midnight.  I'm hoping next week will be the last week of my planning green room and I can get back to a somewhat normal work schedule again.  There is only so many hours a day a person can spend in confined conference room, with no windows, starting at schedules and twisting peoples arms to get their stuff done.  If nothing else the week after next I'll be headed out on business travel to Clearwater, Florida for a week which will be a nice break from the cold Iowa weather and my meeting room.

Basketball Game

On yet another snowy morning here in Clarence we all piled in the car and headed off to Stanwood for an early morning basketball game.  Once again the kids won a hard fought game against one of the best team in the league and to top it all off our team only had 5 players so everyone played the whole game.  The coach on the other team is the guy who runs the league and quite intense, he would probably be better suited for a high school team rather then a group of 4th graders.  Marshall played another good game and is improving every week.  What I've found attending the first competitive sports is that some of the other parents are huge turds.  It is mind boggling to me to have a fat, out of shape mom or dad, scream from the sideline telling there kid how bad they are doing.  Lead by example, get yourself in shape, compete in your own events and show your kids how it's done rather then set a negative example by yelling like an idiot.
