Trick Or Treating

Here is a picture of the boys just before they headed out for trick or treating tonight.  As you can see Clancey is still taking his Jedi costume pretty seriously and Marshall had the added green and silver hair to go with his costume.  While it was rainy and cold tonight both the boys got a whole lot of trick or treating in tonight.  They started at 5:00pm and trick or treated until nearly 7:00pm tonight.  Let me tell you they came home with a huge bag of candy from the adventure tonight.  Well I guess until next year, now we are officially in the Christmas season and ready to start the celebration!

Boys Costumes

One of the trillion things Jen had to finish up last night was the boys costumes so this morning she had them try them on. As you can see the boys costumes turned out really good. For those who aren't familiar Marshall is a mad scientist and Clancey is a Jedi. Just so you know Clancey came up with that pose all on his own and his lightsaber was custom built by papa last Christmas.

The Great Jack-o-lantern Carver

Last night when I got home Jen was in the midst of carving the boys jack-o-lanterns for Halloween tonight. It wasn't too bad except Marshall decided that he wanted one with 14 little eyes which took quite a bit of time. It was too bad that Jen had about 10 other thing to do last night before bed. It's been a lot of busy week for us we're both ready for rest.

Pumpkin Trip 2013

Clancey Swim Across The Pool

Today we headed down to the pool in Tipton again for some more family fun after our trip to the pumpkin farm.  I knew Mema and Papa would want to see for themselves Clancey swimming across the whole pool on his own so took a video with my action cam and posted it for them.  As you can see Clancey is a pretty good little swimmer.

Pumpkin Patch

This morning after the kids got back from Sunday school we all piled in the car to head to the pumpkin patch across from Palisades-Kepler State Park.  Technically it's not a pumpkin patch but actually a CSA during the summer but in the fall they grow and sell pumpkins.  Either way it's a pretty nice place, they have a ton of pumpkins, the prices are reasonable and the people who own it are nice.  In fact as we were leaving he stopped us to tell us they were closing Thursday and the kids could have a free bag of gourds to take with them.  The kids got a pretty big kick out of getting to pick out a bunch of gourds of all shapes and sizes.  After talking to the owner we are probably going to start coming during the summer to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables before our garden starts producing.

Supper At Hickory Park

We just got done with Clancey's birthday supper at Hickory Park with Mema and Papa. Been a long time since we've eaten this much in a single day. Kind of a Thanksgiving and Christmas preview. Been a fun day so far and hopefully we will continue the fun with video games when we get home.

Cake Time

As you can see Clancey decided on somewhat of a non traditional cake this year but Clancey is your non traditional kid.

Opening Presents

After having a great breakfast we played some video games and then let Clancey open some presents before lunch. He ended up getting some pretty good stuff, a couple books, new controller and a bouncing ball.

Clancey Opening A Present On 6th Birthday

Birthday Boy

Today is Clancey's 6th birthday and the birthday boy is pretty excited. This morning he requested that Jen make him some blueberry pancakes and sausage for breakfast. For lunch he wants spaghetti with cheesecake and finally this afternoon we are going to Hickory Park for supper. Going to be a fun day.

Big Night At The Pool

A couple weeks back we decided to buy a family pool pass for over the winter.  We figured since we have a pool in the backyard now it sure would give us a piece of mind to know that the boys can swim good enough to get to the side if they fall in.  For the past two Tuesday's we've met in Tipton after the boys piano lessons and went to the pool for an hour or so.  Well tonight was a huge day at the pool for both of the boys.  Clancey managed to swim from one end of the pool all the way to the other all by himself.  The little dude doggie paddled away and was really tired when he got to the other end buy he made it all by himself.  After a little rest he managed to swim all the way back too.  Marshall managed to swim a full lap, 50 meters, by himself.  I told both the boys if they keep it up we could all do Ironman Kansas together next June.  On Saturday they have an IronKids event where Clancey would swim 50 meters, bike 4 miles, and run 500 meters.  Marshall would have to swim 150 meters, bike 8 miles and run 1 mile.  It sure would be fun for us to do the race as a family :)

First Snow

This morning we woke up to the first snow of the year.  At first the flakes were pretty small but on my way to work this morning they ended up getting quite big.  I didn't get that great of picture since I was driving down the road but Jen did so I stole it from her Instagram feed.  It didn't last very long but it was certainly a reminder that summer is over.

Banana Split

For the past few times we've been to Dairy Queen Clancey has really wanted a Banana Split but every time he asks for one we've had way to big of meal that he couldn't hope to possibly finish it.  Well today the stars aligned and Clancey finally got his banana split.  We had each had a pretty big meal and Marshall and I weren't really in the mood for our own desert.  I figured we could help Clancey finish whatever he couldn't finish so we let him get one.  Turned out it was pretty good and it really required more then one person to finish the whole thing off.

Lunch At Dairy Queen

Being in charge of my final meal before Jen gets home I figured we better head over to the blue Dairy Queen, as Clancey calls it. After were done here I'm not sure what we will do after this but I'm sure we will figure out something.

Video Games Galore

The boys and I are probably going to be in a video game coma by the time Jen gets back. We've been playing Halo for about 12 hours straight and having tons of fun. Although I'm getting frustrated because the boys are starting to get better then me at the game. Part of the fun for me was to have someone I could finally beat at Halo ;-)

Boy Night

With Jen out of town for the night at a class in Fort Dodge it left the boys and I on our own for the night. When the boys heard mommy was going to be gone for the night they were excited but worried I wouldn't feed them. Well to prevent that mommy got us boys some frozen pizzas so when we broke from playing video games we had something to eat.

Dairy Queen

After we got done at the pool Clancey really lobbied hard to have supper a Dairy Queen.  To be perfectly honest it really didn't take that much lobbying, Jen and I were both tired and didn't really want to make supper so it kind of worked out.  When we got there it was kind of a madhouse, apparently everyone wanted to be lazy and have DQ for supper.

Fun Family Time At the Pool

This afternoon after I we had lunch and I got a 9 mile run in we were headed towards having a lazy remainder of the day laying in our chairs.  We had promised the boys we would go to the pool but we were all quickly drooping towards not going, that is when Jen made the decision that we had better go.  Turns out that it was a good idea because we had a lot of fun.  Both Marshall and Clancey are becoming good little swimmers and in fact today Marshall learned to dive off the diving board.  As you can see I brought my action cam with to catch some of the action of us all swimming around.

Watching Kona

After a the last month of not feeling all that energetic and not like working out I used the Ironman World Championship on the computer today as motivation to get a good workout in. Having done 6 Ironman races I'm about halfway to qualifying for Kona with a legacy slot. While some people wouldn't think it's a true qualification personally I think committing to finishing 12 or more Ironman over the course of a decade or more seems legitimate to me. Hopefully I can keep the motivation going so I can get another couple hours in tomorrow.

Last Ball Carry of the Year

Today was Clancey's last football game of the year and the weather was way nicer then I expected it would be when the season started last month.  Clancey had a great time this year and it was pretty fun to see him play the game.  He told me after the game was over that when it gets warm again next spring he wants to start practicing because he wants to score a touchdown next year.  He's a very focused kid so I have no doubt he will.

Supper At Hickory Park

After we got done at the book sale and got the largest haul of books we've ever gotten, we jumped in the car and headed to Hickory Park. It's been a long time since we've been there and we were all craving some awesome bbq. Every time we go especially with Mema and Papa the boys also each get to pick out a bag of candy for the road. Here Marshall is deciding which treats he wants from the large selection.

Planned Parenthood Book Sale

Here we are once again at the Planned Parenthood Book Sale but this time we are here way earlier then usual. Kind of nice to be here early because you beat the rush later and there are a lot more books left to choose from. So far we are having good luck finding books for each of us. Marshall found a new series to read through, which I'm sure will take him a week. ;-)

Afternoon Off

After a crazy busy week at work I decided to play hooky this afternoon to head to Des Moines for the book sale. Not only did I take the afternoon off, Jen took the kids out of school for the afternoon so we could get to the book sale at a decent time. It's nice because not only will we get home at a decent time but we will get to have some supper at Hickory Park too. Nice to get to spend some quality time with the family.

Busy Week

This has been a crazy busy week for me at work.  In fact, I don't think I've eaten supper at home all week.  Right now we are in the midst of a big bid and proposal effort at work and between all the bidding, design, and writing it's been nuts.  Probably going to be another few weeks of this before it settles down a bit.  Hopefully though I'm able to start making it home at a more reasonable time pretty quick though because it's a bummer to be home after the kids go to bed and be up and out the door before they are up.

300 Days To Ironman

300 days seems like a long ways out from Ironman but given the amount of training required to be able to finish the race it really isn't that long.  Once you reach this point in the year you have to start making the transition from casual training to a bit more focused training.  Technically the real meat of my training gets started with 280 days to go but if you aren't training hard right now it gets really hard when 40 weeks to go hits.  Next year will be my second attempt to finish 2 Ironman races in one year and after last time I know I need to focus to accomplish that goal.  As of this morning I'm still not feeling like I've fully recovered from Wisconsin, I'm able to train but still have lingering stiffness and a general lethargic feeling most mornings.  Next year at this time I would only be 1 week out from Wisconsin which makes me realize I need to focus my training so that I can recover faster.

Pool Shut Down For The Year

Just a couple short weeks ago we got the pool put in and after only one short swim by the boys it's shut down for the year. Kind of a bummer to not actually get the use the pool this year but that is part of the reason we got such a good deal on it. Next year we will be swimming in it every day and we are really looking forward to it.

Jen and Her Little Dog

It had been a while since I last put a picture of Jen and Harley together so I kind of figured it was about.time. I remember when we first got this dog and I was told it was for the boys, joke was on me.

Clancey's First Sleep Over

Last night Clancey had is first sleep over at a friends house.  Jen said she had a hard time dropping him off and leaving because "He is so little".  Given it was his first sleep over I was a bit concerned that we would be jumping in the car and heading to Wyoming to get him but as the hours got later into the night we knew he was going to make it.  It did help that his friend's mom sent us a picture part way through the night to show him smiling and having fun.  Although it was kind of quite and weird to not have him around the house this morning.
