Marshall Getting Too Smart

I'm beginning to think that Marshall may be getting a little too smart for his own good. On two occasions tonight I was getting after Marshall and he retorted with a clever response. First on the way home from Tipton Marshall had the lid off his lemonade and was playing with the ice and asked him why he was doing that. He said "I'm researching the ice". Kind of hard to argue with that.

A little later after we had gotten home he was in the bathroom with Clancey trying get him to turn the water on in the bathtub. Well I once again got after hin and told him to stop messing with the tub and leave the bathroom. After he left the bathroom he was standing in the kitchen with his fingers in his mouth feeling a little dejected. He then took his fingers out of his mouth and said "Daddy I wasn't trying to turn the water on and make a bad decision. I was trying to turn the water on to clean the bath because it's really dirty." I think we are going to have our hands full with these two boys ;).

Good Thing Mommies Exist

When got home from work today I walked into the door and saw this. I'm a bit picky when it comes to messes and painting certainly isn't an activity the boys would do when I'm in charge. All I could think was it's a good thing mommies exist because there would certainly be no painting on daddies watch ;).

Headed to See My Family :)

I'm done with the Hy-Vee tri and headed to Thor to pick up my family. Haven't seen them for a week so I'm really excited to see everyone, especially the boys. BTW, if you see this Jen give me a call your phone is going right to voice mail.

Hy-Vee Tri Finisher

I just finished the Hy-Vee tri and and picking up my stuff in transition. Race was alright. My swim and run weren't great but I did have a good bike. Maybe I need to figure out a way to buy time in those events next ;)

Bike In Transition

My bike is in transition for the night. This is one of the biggest transitions that I have ever seen. It is going to be quite the experience to compete with this many people again. The wave starts are going to be nearly 150 people. Should make for a good time :).

Registered and Ready to Go

Well I got through the race briefing and the packet pickup line. Next up is dropping my bike off in transition tonight and trying to get a good night of sleep. At the end of the race briefing they asked everyone that had done the Hy-Vee tri in the past to stand up and go to the registration line first after that they told all Ironmen to stand up I was one of two people who stood up so I felt pretty cool. Granted I'm sure there were a few Ironmen that went with the first group but at least I got to show off a bit ;).

I do have to admit that while walking through the vendor booths I just about bought a aero helmet, figured the wife might get after me if I did ;). Since Trevor bought a new tribike I need every advantage I can get. Maybe I should go rent some zipp wheels for the day. Hmmm.

Hy-Vee Tri

Well I just showed up to the Hy-Vee Tri packet pick up. I actually got here about 10 minutes too late though. Before you can pick up your packet you have to attend a 30 minute race briefing, of course, I got here about 9:10 so now I have to sit around until 10 until the start of the next briefing. I guess this gives me time to blog ;). For those who don't know this is one of the biggest races of the year. The pro's compete for a $250,000 top prize and there are nearly 2000 age groupers competing. Looks like the water is going to be too warm for wetsuits so this will be my first tri I've ever done without a wetsuit. I suspect this means that they will be pulling a few people out of the water when they get in trouble, hopefully I'm not one of them. This will be my first olypmic distance triathlon, 1500 meter swim/25.5 mile bike/6 mile run. Be a bit different then the sprints I've done so far but far easier then the Ironman I done ;). I'm really shooting to finish in the top half of my age group. Being this is a longer event I suspect there will be less beginners so the competition will be tougher. Being I'm not a strong swimmer and an average runner I'm going to have to lay it down hard on the bike to have any chance of finishing in the top half.

I always enjoy being at the triathlon venues, I can't figure it out but it just feels good to be here. I suspect it is probably because it reminds of my old track days being at state or nationals. I'm really looking forward to the race start tomorrow at 6 am :).

Military Convoy In Clarence

The reenactment of the Transcontinental Military Convoy just came through Clarence, in fact they went right in front of our house. Not very often 50 military vehicles from every major war travel in front of your house.

Big Week for Clancey

This week was a big week for little mister Clancey. On Thursday he asked Jen if he could go and use the potty. He has been asking to do this for awhile but generally all he does is just sit there. Well on Thursday he got on the potty and finally peed into the potty. For the rest of the day when he needed to potty he asked Jen and he would pee in the potty. We haven't managed to get any poop out but we're trying. Would be pretty nice to have Clancey potty trained before he is 2!

Leaving Adventureland

After a long day riding rides, playing games and having fun were getting ready to leave. I think everyone had a good time but right now everyone is beat and ready to go. Having fun can be a lot of work and very tiring. I think we are going to hit Hickory Park for supper and then head down 30 for home. I bet we won't get home until 9 or 10 so tomorrow is going to be a rough day of work.

Ice Cream Time

We decided it was time to take a break from rides and eat some ice cream. As much as I tried I have not managed to make Marshall a strawberry lover, it's chocolate all the way for him.

Clancey on the Ferris Wheel

Here is Clancey on yet another ride the Chuck Wagon :)

Marsh and Clancey on the Boats

Marshall Studying the Map

Here is a picture of Marshall studying the park map for after lunch activities. He is sure he wants to ride the bumper cars and the raging river again. After he's not sure but I'm sure he will get a plan defined pretty quick.

Clancey and the Adventureland Puppy

Clancey was a bit nervous but he did go up and say hi.

Clancey's First Ride

Clancey is doing his first ride a Adventureland right now! He is having a blast.

Raging River

Marshall just got soaked on the Raging River. There is a water fall at the exit of the cave and we went right under it. One of the people we went with made the mistake of getting soaked with red underwear on. She will be giving the other visitors a show for a while ;).

The first thing Marshall wanted to do when we got to Adventureland was play skeeball. Now Clancey is playing I better go supervise.

Arrived at Adventureland

The family just arrived at Adventureland for a day of rides, shows and attractions. Should be a fun day for everyone :).

Day at Adventureland

Today I decided to take the day off work and go with the family and a group of friends to Adventureland. Marshall is really excited about getting to go to Advetureland again. Last year toward the end of August Marshall and I spent the day at Adventureland together. Marshall had a great time and has been asking to go back ever since. I'll be blogging about the days activities all day so stay tuned.

The Game of Life

Just yesturday Marshall and Clancey got back from spending the weekend at Mema and Papa's. Apparently while they were there Marshall played "Life" with Mema for the first time ever. I guess he just loved the game and asked if he could borrow it for a while. So tonight Marshall and I sat down and played it for a while. I haven't played that game in 15 years and forgot how fun it can be. Since the game doesn't require much skill to play it is a great game to play with kids. The game also gives Marshall the opportunity to work on basic math skills as it involves a lot of counting of money. Marshall is a huge fan of games so I fully expect to play the game at least a few times a week until we have to give it back.

Jen Working Away

Tonight Jen decided to spend the evening painting the porch stairs. After spending a week painting the porch while I was in New Mexico a few weeks back she decided it was time to finish the porch stairs. Jen is quite the painter after painting nearly every room in the house and and then spending a week painting the porch. She is such a hard worker and it makes me tired to be around her ;)

Copper Creek Photos

Here is a link to photo's from today's event.

Copper Creek Triathlon

From Copper Creek Triathlon

I just got home from the Copper Creek Triathlon. This was another sprint triathlon with a 750 meter swim, 12 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. Raine also decided to do the race with me which happened to be her first triathlon ever. She said the race went alright with the bike being the worst, but that was probably due to the fact she was riding a mountain bike. Other then that she said she was really dizzy coming out of the water but that is something that pretty much happens to everyone.

For myself the race went better then I expected it would. Midweek I did an open water swim of about a half mile and ended up getting a hamstring cramp so bad I had to limp to my car, I was really worried that it would happen again. Turned out that it didn't happen and the swim went alright. Today was a wave in water start so for the first 200 meters or so it was pretty physical in the water. My bike was alright around 21.5 mph average over a fairly hilly course. I really wanted to do 22 mph but I just couldn't get it done. The run was pretty hard for the first mile, in fact when I got to the first mile marker I was in disbelief I had only been running for a mile. After that I got my breath back I was able to finish strong. I suspect that my run time was probably a bit slower then last week but I'll have to wait for the results since I forgot to start my watch, doh!

I have to commend the race organizers for putting on a well organized race. Last week's Pigman in Palo was a freaking mess. There we tons of cars on the bike course, very few volunteers and a 1 mile stretch of the course the runners, bikers, and cars all had to share the road with no cones to mark it off. This race on the other hand was well organized no cars on the bike or run course, tons of volunteers and great race swag. I will certainly put this on my list of races to do every year.

True Value Hardware

America needs more little stores like True Value. The store has nearly everything you need to do any project around the house and it isn't a huge bohemouth store like Menards or Lowes. While it's a chain store, True Value has that small town store feel that I wish we had more of these days. We got asked multiple times if we needed help from people that actually had the knowledge to help us. Jen was there looking through the bolt bins looking for things to create crafts out of. She ended up finding a bunch of stuff which came right off of my bike tab ;).

Copper Creek Tri

Well I'm signed into the Copper Creek Triathlon which is tomorrow here in Pleasant Hill. Copper Creek has the best swag of any triathlon in the area. Got a running hat, a Zoot Swim bag, a water bottle and they even gave my wife a cow bell to cheer me on in the morning. Hopefully the weather holds and they actually have the race this year as opposed to last years torrential down pour as triathletes huddled under anything they could find. Check back in tomorrow for the results.

Des Moines Farmers Market

This morning after breakfast at IHOP Jen and I decided to head downtown for the farmers market. We didn't know quite what to expect but I didn't expect it to be as big as it was. I assumed some tents with vendors but I didn't expect it to be a mini-festival. There were bands, food vedors, people selling crafts it was huge. We will have to come back again sometime to do it again.

Coldplay Concert

The Coldplay concert was awesome last night. It was good that they put on an awesome show because I don't know much Coldplay music, which means I couldn't sing along like everyone else. The other two bands Howling Bells and Snow Patrol were pretty good too. I only had heard one of their songs but they were fun to listen too none-the-less. The show ended up getting over at about 11 last night and took nearly a half hour to get out of the parking lot, so we made it home around midnight.

At Coldplay Concert

Here is a picture of Jen and I at the Coldplay concert at the Well Fargo Arena in Des Moines. This band called Howling Bells just went on and they weren't too bad. Next up is Snow Patrol and then Coldplay. I have to say that the arena isn't all that full yet so hopefully some more people show up.

Weekend Together

With boys and Mema and Papa's Jen and I are having a weekend away, first one in a long time. Right now we are at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch/supper, otherwise known as lupper, after this we are headed to the Coldplay concert at Well Fargo Arena. Tomorrow we are planning on hanging out in Des Moines and then Sunday I have the Copper Creek Triathlon. Hopefully I actually get to race this year. Last year a severe storm came through and they had to cancel the race.

Marshall and Clancey

Here is a picture I took of Marshall and Clancey sitting on the couch getting ready to head to story hour.

Corporate Training

For the last three days I've been stuck in corporate training. While I'm not a big fan of sitting for 9 hours a day on hotel conference room banquet chairs generally the game at the end of training is always fun. Most people think these things are stupid but I really think they are fun as hell. It's the time where you get to make a complete ass of yourself and rewarded for it. The game at the end of this session was called the Mars Trekker. I would go into more detail but I was sworn to secrecy and so I guess you will have to take Next Generation Leadership to find out what the game is all about. My team the "Rocky Racers" ended up winning the game, Yes! For those of you who don't know me very well I'm a highly competitive person, I would push my own mother down to win a game. Turns out I was with a group of people that were just like me, so the other teams didn't have a chance. All in all while the 2.5 days I had to wait to get to to the game were boring the game at the end made it all worth it.

Clancey the Ghost

Pigman Pictures

Here are a bunch of pictures I took from today's event the Pigman Sprint Triathlon out at Pleasant Creek State Park in Palo, Iowa.

Display Apps Triathlon Challenge

The Display Apps Triathlon Challenge ended up going really well. Everyone showed up and everyone finished. A couple of the people who hadn't trained were hating life but everyone had a good time and I think they will sign up next year. I don't know for sure who the champ was out of the group but it wasn't me. I think it ended up being Trevor Garson but we are waiting on Mike Powelka's result.

Update: 2:40 pm 6-7-2009
Looks like Trevor Garson (1:20) ended up getting first place in the Triathlon Challenge followed Mike Powelka(1:21) and then me(1:23). One of the people on my team Andy Tekippe ended up winning a Quintana Roo Tequilo tri-bike as a door prize which is pretty cool. Looks like Andy is going to have to do more triathlons now.

Pigman Finisher

I just finished the Pigman sprint triathlon 1:23:58, 14th in my division of 55. I pretty happy with my time. Wanted to go a little faster in the swim and transition was slow and I ended up getting beat by Trevor. Under 1:25 was kind of my goal and 1:20 was my stretch goal, maybe next time.

Race Day

Its race day and my transition area is setup.

What the Heck Is This?

On our way to Cedar Rapids Marshall and I saw this car/motocycle/trike driving down the round. Not exactly sure what it is but it turn quite a few heads.

Ice Cream at Coldstone

After we got done picking up my race packet and an unsuccessful search for the video Dirt, Marsh wanted to get a treat. He said he wanted to go to Coldstone because there were a lot of ice cream flavors he hadn't gotten to try yet. Today it was chocolate with rainbow sprinkles. I've tried and tried to make strawberry his favorite flavor to no avail, Oh well.

Pigman Packet Pickup

Marsh and I headed over to Cedar Rapids so I could pickup my race packet for the Pigman. As walked into the conference room where you picked up your packet I all of a sudden hear someone say "I recognize that guy". I look up and who do I see but the guy I walked the last 6 miles of the Ironman with last year. We chatted for a bit, swapping Ironman tales for a bit and then I bid him farewell. What a small world.

One Day Until the Race

It's just under 24 hours until the start of the Pigman sprint triathlon and the Display Applications Triathlon Challenge. Ended up getting 12 people signed up for the race all but one of them had never done a triathlon before. After a little arm twisting this week I'm pretty sure that everyone of them is going to make it to the starting line tomorrow. On Monday I had a few people wavering about coming, mainly because they didn't train, but I was able to convince them that they should at least give it a try. All but a few were able to get out to Palo this week for an open water swim which gave people confidence to do the race. The swim tends to be the scariest part of the triathlon for most people so getting in an open water swim made people feel like they could do it. Right now I feel very confident about everyone finishing the race. Everyone just needs to focus on keeping themselves under control on the swim especially those without wetsuits. I'll try to report from the event tomorrow so tune in for pictures and reports in the morning.

More Messy Eating Pics

My blog just isn't complete without a bunch of messy eating pictures. Tonight Jen made cake for dessert and Clancey was eating it like we were going to steal it at any moment. He shoveled in bite after bite like he was a competative eating champion. I don't think the picture captures the shear amount of cake he had on his face but you get the idea.

Maybe This Wasn't a Good Idea

When we got home from our bike ride we looked down the street and saw this. It appears someone got the great idea to drive their SUV up on the dirt pile a dump truck had left behind. They got just high enough to get their SUV stuck and that was about it. Note to self: Listen to wife when she tells you something is a bad idea.

Bike Ride

Tonight Jen had to go to a community foundation meeting so the boys and I decided to get Marshall's bike and the wagon out for a ride. Marshall is getting quite a bit better on his bike and maybe in a month or two we could start thinking about removing the training wheels. Maybe next year Marshall could do an Ironkid event ;)

I Love Blueberries

Here is a picture I took of Clancey after mowing through nearly a whole bag of blueberries at supper. In fact he is asking for more blueberries right now. I suspect he is going to have some poop that is a interesting color tomorrow.
