Why We Have So Many Hotwheels

Everytime we go to Target I just can't help but buy Marshall a new Hotwheel. He's just such a darn good kid all the time so it is hard to tell him no. It's not going to be long before I'm buying two hotwheels per trip when Clancey gets a little older.

Those Bastards

They said this wasn't available in stores. Those Bastards lied to me!!! If you can't trust infomercials who can you trust.

Target Trip

After Ting's we headed over to Target for some groceries before the big game tomorrow. Here is a picture of Marsh and Clancey posing in the ever changing Target seasonsal section. I think I have a full collection of pictures from this area. Halloween, Christmas, Home decor we have them all. I better get going because I have impatient little men waiting on me to blog.

Lunch at Ting's

For lunch we decided to head to Ting's Red Lantern. About 10:30 Marshall was starving and begging for lunch so we though an early lunch was a good idea. Marshall ordered the Sesame Chicken and Jen and I got the Orange Chicken Clancey is going to share with all of us. This Marshall's first time ordering an adult meal and he is pretty excited about it.

Clancey the Cereal Theif

Clancey has figured out where we store the cereal and that he is tall enough to help himself. So every night when he starts to get hungry he stands by the cupboard and helps himself to our wide selection of cereals. Here is a picture of him stealing some of that cereal.

Marshall Challenges Daddy To Race

Last night when I got home Marshall was sprinting around the house. Now being that he is only 5 this really isn't all that out of the ordinary so I really wasn't that surprised. Apparently he had eaten some Kiwi and Jen had told him it would make him fast. So as soon I came in the door Marshall wanted to demonstrate his Kiwi induced speed to me. He then stood by the table in the kitchen and took off like a dart into the dining room all the way through to the foyer. When he got back I told him he was really fast and that is when he stated that he was faster then me and could beat me in a race. I reminded him that not only was I an Ironman but was also the 800 meter state champ. He said that he knew that but it didn't matter and he could still beat me. Not being one to back down from a challenge I told him that as soon as it gets warm we could go outside and race :)

Little Ironman in Training

Here's a picture of Marsh getting ready to go swimming with me today. I've been telling Marshall that he needs to start training if he wants to be an Ironman. Marshall keeps telling me that he doesn't want to do it because he is scared of the swim, which doesn't make him any different then anyone else who does the race. All kidding aside Marshall has been getting quite a bit more comfortable in the water so hopefully by this summer he will be ready to go under the water and really start to enjoy the pool.

Clancey Holds My Hand

Today when we were leaving Olive Garden Clancey held my hand and walked with me. This is a pretty big moment for Clancey. Normally when you try to get Clancey to hold your hand he pulls it back being fiercly independent as he is. Today, though, was different I had just put his coat on him and told him to hold my hand and much to my surprise he reached up and grabbed it. So there I was proudly striding out of the restuarant hand in hand with Clancey :).

Olive Garden for Lunch

For lunch we decided to head to the Olive Garden for some bread sticks and pasta. It is important to point out that this is Clancey's first to Olive Garden and so far so good. When you do lunch with a one year old it's always hit or miss whether it will go well. Actually as Clancey has gotten older he is starting to behave a little better at restuarants so we can go out.

Joe Cool

Today when we were at Target we bought Marshall a new pair of sunglasses. As you can see he is just about as cool as they get. In fact he just took his hat off and was worried about how his hair looked. He's just growing up so fast next thing you know he going to be a teenager and wanting to take the car.

Slumberland

Jen tricked me into going to slumberland while we waited for Granite City to open. I bet this is going to cost a lot of money ;)

Morning at the Eye Doctor

This morning Jen and I had our yearly eye appointments. So far everything looks good. Only problem was we went at the same time so we each had to take a kid to watch during our checkup. Of course Marshall is being an absolute angel for me while I suspect Clancey is probably being rather naughty for Jen but I could be wrong.

Common Display Apps Triathlon Challenge

Over the past week I signed up for the Pigman sprint triathlon and had an idea, I should get a my team to sign up for it too. So today I started to ping my team about signing up not expecting much of a response. I figured that everyone would turn me down but much to my surprise almost everyone on my team said yes and actually signed up right in front of me. Right now I have nearly half of my signed up and excited to do it. I still have a few people to talk to but I expect that a majority of my team will sign up. Some of the people on my team that signed up have never even done a 5K so I think it is great they are ready to take on the challenge of a sprint triathlon (500 meter swim, 14 mile bike, 3 mile run). I think that I am going to make a T-shirt for everyone to wear on race day. I'm excited to see how everyone does.

Marshall Starting to Read

Marshall has really been showing signs of reading lately and tonight he read a book to me. It is very exciting to see Marshall work to sound out the words and then instantly realize what the word is. After he got done reading to me we started to work on spelling three letter words with his magnent letters. He did very good and was able to spell most of the words without help. I don't know when most kids start to read and spell but doing it in preschool seems pretty good to me :).

No More Snow!!!

Uggghhh... Its snowing again. This year has probably been the snowyest and coldset year in recent history. It has been awhile since we have had so much snow that we ran out of places to actually put snow. It seems like if it's not snowing it's freezing out. I guess I just have to keep telling myself that spring is only 61 days away.

Clancey Likes Tea!?!!

This morning Clancey decided he wanted to drink all of Jen's tea. I've never seen a baby who likes tea but apparently Clancey does. This kid surprises me more and more everyday. His name fits him to a T ;).

Marshall's Birthday

The festivities are finally over here at the VanOort house. I think Marshall has great birthday and he got pretty much everything he wanted. This birthday can officially be labeled the hotwheel birthday. He got two hotwheel playset, about a dozen new hotwheels and a hotwheels video game. I think the kid probably has close to hundred hotwheel at this point. It was nice that most of the family made it over to celebrate with us. In fact Jigs and Allison were the first to get here and nearly the last to go. We don't get to see Jigs or Allison that much so it was great that they could come and since Jigs accepted a job in New Mexico we are going to be seeing even less of him pretty soon. All in all it was a good day and hopefully we can all get together again before Jigs leaves.

Presents!!!

Were openong presents now and Marsh is having a great time.

Marshall's Birthday

Right now we are in the midst of celebrating Marshall's birthday. Marshall is opening presents so I better get back.

The Birthday Boy

Technically Marshall's birthday was yesturday but we are celebrating it today. Marshall got to open a few presents last night and one of them was a game he has been wanting for a while now Burnout Paradise. Today when everyone gets here we are going to have chili and then Marshall will get more presents which he is excited about. I'm sure we are going to have a good day.

Closing in on Spring

I know it's hard to think about after the last few days of 20 below temps but were closing in on spring. Tonight while I was at Target they were putting out all the spring stuff. It really makes you long for warm weather and being able to get outside again. Although I could do without the mowing ;).

Geek Humor

Where Marshall Spends a Better Part Of Every Night

This is the place that Marshall spends a better part of every night, the supper table. Marshall like every kid his age is going through his I don't eat phase. Every night he takes one bite and then asks to be excused. We then tell him no and it goes like this for 45 minutes to an hour its a rather monotonous infinite loop. He trys everything I need to potty, my tummy hurts, etc. Then an hour later he wants a snack. Marshall's supper time algorithm:

While true
Answer = AskToBeExcused()
If Answer = No
I = RandomRange(1, 5)
If I = 1:
ExplainWhyICantEat()
If I = 2:
SayTummyHurts()
If I = 3:
AskRandomQuestion()
If I = 4:
AttemptToGetOffChair()
If I = 5:
StareAtPlate()
If Answer = Yes:
RunInGleeFromSupperTable()
Break

Time.Play(1 hour)

AskForSnack()

And that is how it goes ;)

Snow Day

Last night we got 7 more inches of snow and today pretty much everything is cancelled. I looked at the road conditions the wind chill and the fact there is a towing ban and said it's not worth it. I'm sure my boss will give me crap for being a wus but it is all in jest. It is nice to have the office now so I have a place I can work all day.

Blizzard?!?

Yesturday was supposed to be the first blizzard of the year. Once again the news has us all worried that we had better be prepared to hunker down. So I decided that it's best I leave work at 2 so I'm sure I can make it home and miss all of the traffic. While the drive home was a bit treacherous, mainly due to the snow plow I was behind, the blizzard didn't really turn out to be much of anything. The snow stopped around 6 I don't think the wind ever really picked up so all we really got was a bunch more snow. It did turn out nice though because Marshall and I went outside for a half hour and played on the snow pile. I think Marshall is going to want to start making that part of our nightly routine.

Council Meeting

Tonight was the big Clarence City Council meeting. Nothing too controversial tonight except we did not decide on the new Clarence Police Chief. I guess I was under the assumption that we had done all the interviews that we had planned on doing and tonight we would get someone hired but turns out the police committee wants to see some more resumes'. I really hope the major and the police committee don't drag their feet too long on this because crime is on the rise since our last chief left his post. Other then that same old, same old. I'll tell you one thing it sure won't break my heart when my term is up.

Arranging The Office

Tonight Jen and I started to arrange our new office, ie Clancey's old room. Jen and I are a bad combination when it comes to arranging furniture it's one of the few things we never agree on. I am more about function and Jen is more about form. We probably spent two hours arranging and rearranging and never came up with anything we could agree on. I suspect tomorrow while I'm at work Jen will put the room together how she wants it because that's how this always works out ;).

Two Little Psycho's

Marsh and Clancey have been two little psycho's today. They're bouncing off the walls like we gave them each a couple of espresso's. I guess Jen and I are going to have to get used to a loud crazy house with two boys ;)

Clancey Out Doing Some Shopping

Here a picture of Clancey doing some shopping at Walmart, aka the worst store on earth. He stopped for a while by the H&R Block cube apparently he had some taxes to get done. I guess toddlers have to have priorities.

Marshall the Little Astronomer

Grandma Marsha got Marshall a telescope for christmas and tonight the moon was just perfect to look at. Marshall and I managed to get the moon in pretty good focus and could see the craters on the moon. Marshall was pretty excited and really enjoyed it.

Master ISpy Player

Marshall and I are playing ISpy and he is kicking the crap out of me. It damn hard finding these stupid items on these cards.

Boys Sharing a Room

Ever since Clancey was born we've told Marshall that the two would be sharing a room someday. Well today is the day that they move in together. We don't exactly know what the logistics of bedtime will be but I guess we will figure it out. I think the boys are going to really enjoy sharing a room. Now that we've moved Clancey out of his room we plan on making his room into an office. It will be nice to have an office again. With two little boys having my desk in their play room makes it hard to get work done.

Christmas Tree Coming Down

Today is the day the Christmas Tree is finally coming down. It's always a sad day when the tree comes down since it has been a fixure in the house for well over a month. Plus it means the Christmas season is officially over and its going to be another year until the Holidays again. I guess now it's time to look forward to spring, summer and summer vacation :)

More Snow

Now that Christmas is over I'm ready for the snow to be done and spring to come. I don't know what it is but before Christmas snow is so magical and exciting and after Christmas it's just aggravating and you wish it would just go away. Maybe if I take the boys out and play in the snow the snow won't seem so annoying.

Sick Kids Again

Well here we are again with a house full of sick kids. Both Marshall and Clancey have come down with a cough and are both very congested. I blame Jen. On Monday Jen stated that this was the only week this month that we didn't have some kind of doctors appointment scheduled, of course fate had to prove her wrong. Actually both the boys are both feeling better today so hopefully by Monday we will be over this and ready to move onto the next one ;)

Marshall the Boy Genius

On Tuesday Marshall brought his preschool report card home and he had all S's. For those of you out there who haven't been in preschool in a while S is the equivalent of an A. The teacher also only had good things to say about Marshall. Here are some excerpts from his report card:

Marshall is eager to learn and always has a positive attitude.

Marshall does wonderful with puzzles. He is able to complete our most difficult puzzles.

We are also working on higher number with Marshall. He is doing a great job.

Can identify upper case letters - Knows them all!! :)

Marshall is having a good year at preschool. I enjoy having him in class. He is doing well in all developmental areas, and will be prepared to begin Kindergarten next year. He has wonderful number and letter mastery. He also makes the connection between the letters and the sounds they make. This is an important pre-reading skill that we will continue to work on the rest of the year. He also has a good sense of numbers, and enjoys solving math problems with the math manipulatives.

Marshall enjoys learning and participates well in all our activities. He has been playing more regularly with the other children in our class, and seems to be enjoying this. He follows the rules at preschool well, and is polite and kind.

As you can see he is doing great and I'm sure this is just a preview of great things to come :)

Marshall and Clancey Shopping

Marshall decided that we needed some stuff from Hy-Vee so he loaded Clancey up and headed to the store. Here's a picture of Marsh pushing Clancey in the cart as he picked up groceries for the week.

Clancey Shopping at Staples

Here's a picture of little Clancey shopping at Staples. Of course just like always he couldn't help but break into a dance ;).

Stringtown Grocery

Today we took Mike and Michelle down to Stringtown Grocery just outside of Kalona. This is an Amish Grocery Store that sells bulk products for really cheap prices. We've had quite a few of the different products from here and they have been really good so I would highly recommend you stop and visit sometime. Also were else can you shop where people are dressed in old time clothes and people drive up in a horse drawn carriage.

Clancey Breaks Into Dance at Jimmy John's

Everyone out there who has been to a Jimmy John's knows that they play rather loud and rocking music. Well of course little Clancey had to break into a dance right there in the middle of the place. Clancey doesn't care he rocks out anywhere ;)

Why Marshall Plays Video Games

This morning Marshall started in bright and early asking to play video games and like always we tried to steer him towards other activities. Finally he said "I have to play video games so I can practice driving since I'm going to be a racecar driver when I grow up."

New Years Day Council Meeting!??!!

This year the Clarence City Council decided to start the year off early and have a meeting at 9:00am New Years Day. We recently had a council person resign due to health problems which leaves us in the position of having to appoint our 2nd new member in three years. Just like always I'm sure this is going to be a contentious affair so what better way to start the New Year. I don't know what exactly lead to the urgency to have this on a holiday but somehow I agreed to it and now I have to go, hmmm. I just hope it can be quick!
